Back in January, Canadian Metallica tribute band Sandman received a 41-page cease and desist letter from Metallica's attorney alleging the band's logo was too similar to the band they paid tribute to.
When Metallica saw the story online, they said it was the first they heard of it, blaming it on an "overzealous attorney" who sent the letter without them knowing, saying they support cover bands and cover songs, with their long history of releasing cover albums themselves, with Lars calling the tribute band personally to give his seal of approval. Turns out, Metallica really wanted to make good.
Ahead of their not-so-secret Toronto gig, Metallica invited the band to hang out and Sandman ended up meeting all of their idols, posing for a photo and even getting on Metallica's Instagram page.
Sandman have since updated their Facebook page to state they are "the only Metallica-sanctioned tribute band."
